Donald Young School Redevelopment & New Daycare Facility

This EL-8 Elementary School Redevelopment involved a multi-year, multi-phase approach to completely refresh and expand the existing community school facility. Phase 1 involved a 15,560 s.f. addition replacing the existing primary classroom wing, which remained in operation during construction. Phase 2 opened in January 2019 and consists of an 11,000 s.f. comprehensive renovation of the existing gymnasium early years classroom wing. Phase 3, slated for tender in the spring of 2020, involves the addition of a new 54 space daycare facility. Site conditions dictated the location for the new additions at both the front and back of the existing school, bordered by a meandering creek bed and provincial highway, which posed significant setback parameters. The school expansion was carefully sited to meet these restrictions resulting in a long building configuration that contains 5 classrooms, an early learning suite, a special education classroom, resource rooms, administration, library and related ancillary service and support space, connected to the newly renovated gym wing by the Student Commons which is anchored by a flex classroom and the library.

The building utilizes interior and exterior finishes that are representative of the natural beauty of the region. A 100 ft long folded accent wall animates the front entry, while a continuous birch ceiling is expressed through the Student Commons and Library to further strengthen the connection of this space.
